EV charging stations in Australian Capital Territory

30 charging locations and 124 ports across 2 cities and towns, 89 of them DC fast.

Charging in Australian Capital Territory

Canberra is well covered for its population in our data. The ACT is effectively one city plus its town centres, and the charging follows: most locations sit across Canberra itself with a cluster around Tuggeranong, and nothing is more than a short drive from something else.

The port mix is strong too. Around seven in ten ports counted here are rapid rather than Level 2, a higher share than most of the country, so charging in the territory is usually a short deliberate stop rather than an overnight plug in. Evie leads on locations, with Exploren, Tesla, Chargefox and Thundergrid all running sites of their own.

On the road

The Federal Highway north to the Hume Highway and Sydney, and the Barton Highway towards Yass, are the main links out, and both start from a well supplied city. The Monaro Highway runs south towards the Snowy Mountains and the far south coast, where charging thins out well before you reach the ranges. Most driving inside the territory is short enough that corridor planning only matters on the way out.

Plugs and payment

AC is Type 2 and DC is CCS2, with CHAdeMO limited to older units. Government and shopping centre car parks often have untethered Level 2, so keep a cable in the car. Tap to pay is common on newer rapid chargers here, but the mix of networks in a small territory makes having several apps installed genuinely useful.

Three things to know

  • Canberra winters are properly cold, so precondition on the charger and the battery will accept full rapid speed.
  • Fill up in the territory before runs to the coast or the snowfields, where sites are scarce.
  • With several networks in one small city, having two or three apps ready avoids wasted detours.
