Planning an EV road trip: where and how long to charge
Highway fast-charging networks, the 10 to 80 percent rhythm, winter range loss and a pre-trip checklist.
The long drive is where an EV asks for a little planning. Not much: with the fast-charging networks of 2026, a 400-mile day means two stops of about twenty minutes, and they line up with the breaks you would take anyway. Here is how to organise them without surprises.
Where the fast chargers are
Highway corridors in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia’s east coast now have ultra-fast sites (150 to 350 kW) at most major service areas and travel plazas, plus Tesla Superchargers that increasingly accept other brands. A typical site has 4 to 12 stalls. On the map filter for 150 kW and above to see the sites along your route, and check live status before you commit to an exit.
Do not overlook off-highway hubs: 2 to 5 minutes from the exit, usually at a supermarket, a mall or a fuel station, they often have more stalls, lower prices and shorter queues on holiday weekends.
How long to stop
Arrive with 10 to 20 percent and leave at 70 to 80. In that band the car takes its peak rate and the stop is short; past 80 the minutes stretch and you pay the same per kWh for slower charging. A worked example, 75 kWh battery, 33 kWh per 100 miles at highway speed:

Two stops for 400 miles, under an hour in total. With passengers and children they coincide with the breaks you were taking regardless.
Highway consumption is higher
At 75 mph an EV uses 30 to 50 percent more energy than in mixed driving, because drag grows with the square of speed. A rated 280 miles becomes 190 to 200. Holding 65 to 68 mph with adaptive cruise recovers 25 to 40 miles per charge for a few minutes’ difference over three hours. In winter add another 15 to 25 percent for cabin heating; a heat pump helps a lot.
Avoiding queues
The peaks are predictable: Friday afternoon before a holiday, Sunday evening returns, summer weekends. On those days:
- Prefer off-highway hubs and the less famous service areas.
- Check live status on the map before taking the exit; if every stall is busy, continue to the next site if you have the margin.
- Do not wait for 100 percent; freeing the stall is also courtesy to the queue.
- Some networks cut power above 80 percent when others are waiting anyway.
Paying on the road
Highway sites nearly all take contactless cards now, besides the network apps and the main roaming apps. The tap-to-pay rate is the highest one, so if you make more than one long trip a month, a membership or the app of the network densest on your route pays for itself. Pre-trip checklist
- Battery to 100 percent the night before, preferably on Level 2.
- Route set in the car’s navigation with the stops, so the battery arrives preconditioned.
- Apps or cards for the two or three main networks on the route installed with a payment method attached.
- For Type 2 markets, your own cable on board: you will want it at the hotel.
- A plan B for every stop, 15 to 20 miles further on.
With those habits, the electric road trip is no slower than a petrol one, and the stops become part of the journey rather than an interruption.
