Charging in New South Wales
New South Wales concentrates its charging in Sydney, which holds close to half the state's locations on its own. Wollongong is the next real cluster. After that things thin out quickly: Newcastle, the Central Coast, Coffs Harbour, Tamworth and Dubbo each show only a handful of sites for their size, and some towns of that scale, Maitland among them, show none at all.
The trade is quality over quantity. Roughly two thirds of the ports here are rapid rather than Level 2, so the sites that do exist are generally built for a short stop rather than a long one. Evie and Chargefox run the most locations, with Tesla, BP Pulse and NRMA filling in around them.
On the road
The M1 Pacific Motorway between Sydney and Newcastle, and the Pacific Highway running north towards Coffs Harbour and the Queensland border, link the towns that do show sites in our data. The Hume Highway south towards Albury and the Princes Highway down the Illawarra coast work, but sites are spaced out. Head west over the Blue Mountains, or onto the Newell Highway towards Dubbo, and the gaps between rapid chargers get long enough to plan around.
Plugs and payment
AC charging is Type 2 and DC is CCS2, with a dwindling number of CHAdeMO cables on older units. Carry your own Type 2 cable, because plenty of Level 2 posts in car parks are untethered. Contactless card payment is common on newer rapid units, but keep the main network apps loaded as a backup.
Three things to know
- Sydney sites get busy on weekends and holidays, so check the live map before committing to one car park.
- Heading inland over the Great Dividing Range, top up in the last big town rather than the next one.
- Bushfire and flood closures reroute country highways, so leave enough charge to take a long detour.
