Charging in Northern Territory

The Northern Territory is the hardest place in Australia to drive electric. Our data shows only a couple of public charging locations across the whole territory, one around Darwin and one at Alice Springs, with nothing listed at Palmerston. Public charging here is a bonus, not a plan.

Most of the small number of ports counted are rapid, which helps a great deal when you reach one, but there is no network underneath them to fall back on. Evie is the only network with locations in our data. Assume you will charge where you sleep, and confirm it before you arrive.

On the road

The Stuart Highway is the territory, running from Darwin through Katherine and Tennant Creek to Alice Springs and the South Australian border, with hundreds of kilometres between towns. The Barkly Highway east into Queensland and the Victoria Highway west into Western Australia tell the same story. Public rapid charging along these routes is effectively absent from our data, so every stage needs planning before you turn the key.

Plugs and payment

AC is Type 2 and DC is CCS2, the same standards as the rest of the country, with CHAdeMO essentially legacy. Carry a Type 2 cable and whatever portable charging equipment your car supports, since much of what you use will be ordinary power at accommodation rather than a public post.

Three things to know

Ring ahead to accommodation and confirm you can charge overnight before you commit to a stage.
Extreme heat and long constant speed runs both eat range, so plan stages well inside your rating.
Wet season flooding closes Top End roads for days, so never leave yourself without a return margin.
