Charging in Queensland

Queensland's coverage sits almost entirely in the south east corner. Brisbane holds about half the state's locations, with the Gold Coast and Logan City adding more. The Sunshine Coast, Cairns, Toowoomba, Caloundra, Mackay and Rockhampton register only one to three sites each, and Townsville shows none in our data, which is worth planning around on any northern run.

What is here leans hard towards rapid charging: roughly three quarters of the ports counted are rapid rather than Level 2. Evie and Chargefox run the most locations, alongside Queensland Electric Super Highway sites and BP Pulse.

On the road

The Pacific Motorway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast joins the two biggest clusters in the state. The Bruce Highway is the long one, carrying you from Brisbane through Rockhampton and Mackay up to Townsville and Cairns, with towns and chargers spread thin across the middle sections. The Warrego Highway west to Toowoomba is straightforward, but anything further inland needs checking before you set out.

Plugs and payment

AC is Type 2, DC is CCS2, and CHAdeMO survives only on older units. Bring your own Type 2 cable for untethered destination posts at shopping centres and motels. Tap to pay is normal on newer rapid chargers, though carrying the main network apps saves time when a card reader is being difficult.

Three things to know

Park in shade where you can, since heat and humidity slow charging and make waiting in the car unpleasant.
North of the Sunshine Coast, treat every charging stop as the one that matters and top up early.
Wet season flooding closes northern highways, so check road conditions as well as charger availability.
