Charging in South Australia
South Australia's network is centred almost entirely on Adelaide, which holds roughly three quarters of the state's locations. The Adelaide Hills add a few more, and Whyalla, Mount Gambier, Gawler and Mount Barker have one to three sites each. Beyond those, the map is mostly empty.
Only about a third of the ports counted here are rapid, so much of the state's charging is Level 2 in car parks and at destinations. Jolt and Chargefox run the most locations, with ChargePoint and Evie also on the map. In practice Adelaide is easy, and everywhere else rewards planning a day ahead.
On the road
The South Eastern Freeway climbs out of Adelaide towards Murray Bridge and continues on the Dukes Highway to the Victorian border, the main interstate run. The Princes Highway down the Limestone Coast to Mount Gambier and the Sturt Highway through the Barossa and Riverland both have anchor towns but long quiet stretches. North on the Augusta Highway, and west on the Eyre Highway, coverage falls away fast.
Plugs and payment
AC is Type 2, DC is CCS2, and CHAdeMO shows up only on older hardware. Kerbside and car park Level 2 posts are often untethered, so carry your own cable. Tap to pay appears on newer rapid units, but some networks around Adelaide still work best through their own app, so set those up before you need them.
Three things to know
- The Hills climb out of Adelaide costs range, and you get some back on the descent, not all.
- Summer heatwaves are severe here, so charge before the afternoon peak and keep the cabin cooling.
- For Eyre Peninsula or outback trips, expect little public charging past the top of the gulf, so leave Adelaide full.
