Charging in Tasmania

Tasmania's network is small but coherent. Hobart and Launceston hold most of the locations, with a few at Devonport and a single site listed at Burnie. The statewide count is modest, though the island is compact enough that sensible spacing matters more than raw numbers.

A little over half of the ports counted are rapid rather than Level 2, and much of the Level 2 sits at accommodation and town car parks, which suits the way people tour here: drive a few hours, stop for a while, plug in. Chargefox and Electric Highway Tasmania run the most locations, with Tesla also present.

On the road

The Midland Highway between Hobart and Launceston is the spine, and the Bass Highway along the north coast links Launceston, Devonport and Burnie. The Tasman Highway up the east coast and the Lyell Highway west towards Queenstown and Strahan are slower, hillier and much thinner on charging. Plan the west coast leg carefully, because it is the part of the island where a missed stop costs you most.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC, with legacy CHAdeMO on a few older units. Carry a Type 2 cable, because a lot of Tasmania's Level 2 is untethered posts at hotels and car parks. Contactless payment is common on newer rapid chargers, though app coverage is worth arranging before you leave the mainland.

Cold, wet weather and constant hills cut range noticeably, so plan on less than your rated figure.
Arriving by ferry at Devonport, sort out your first charge before heading inland to the highlands.
West coast towns are far apart with few sites, so leave Hobart or Launceston full.
