Charging in Victoria
Victoria is compact by Australian standards and the charging reflects that. Melbourne holds over half the state's locations, but Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo each carry a genuine cluster rather than a token site, and regional centres like Warrnambool, Shepparton, Mildura and Wodonga are on the map too.
Victoria also has the largest port count of any Australian state in our data, and close to three in five of those ports are rapid, so touring the state on electricity is realistic with a little planning. Chargefox and Evie hold the most locations, with Tesla, Ampol AmpCharge and GET Electric adding sites on top.
On the road
The Hume Freeway north to Wodonga and the Princes Freeway west through Geelong towards Warrnambool are the two strongest runs. The Western Freeway to Ballarat and the Calder Freeway to Bendigo both end at towns with several sites, and the Calder continues on to Mildura, which has a couple. The Great Ocean Road is slow going and best treated as a destination drive, with charging planned around the coastal towns rather than assumed along the way.
Plugs and payment
Type 2 for AC, CCS2 for DC, and the occasional legacy CHAdeMO cable on older hardware. Melbourne car parks and regional destination chargers are frequently untethered Level 2, so keep a Type 2 cable in the car. Tap to pay is widespread on newer rapid sites, while older Level 2 posts more often want an app or an RFID card.
Three things to know
- Alpine and Western District winters cut range, so precondition while plugged in and pad your margin.
- Melbourne's inner suburbs lean on street and car park charging, which means slower Level 2, not rapid.
- Weekend traffic to Geelong and the coast fills chargers, so start regional trips with a full battery.
