Charging in Western Australia
Western Australia's charging is overwhelmingly a Perth story. The metro area holds the large majority of the state's locations, and everything beyond it is a scattering: Mandurah, Albany, Kalgoorlie, Geraldton and Busselton have a few each, Bunbury and Kwinana a couple.
The mix is different from the eastern states, too. Only about a third of the ports counted here are rapid, so much of what you see on the map is Level 2 at shopping centres, hotels and council car parks, suited to a long stop rather than a quick top up. Chargefox and Tesla hold the most locations, with Evie and Chargestar also present.
On the road
The Kwinana Freeway and Forrest Highway south to Mandurah and Bunbury, and on into the South West towards Busselton, is the corridor with the most options. Albany Highway to the south coast and Great Eastern Highway out to Kalgoorlie are long, quiet drives with few towns in between. North on the Brand Highway towards Geraldton, and east on the Eyre Highway across the Nullarbor, coverage is genuinely sparse.
Plugs and payment
Type 2 for AC, CCS2 for DC, with CHAdeMO only on older legacy units. An untethered Type 2 cable in the boot is close to essential here, given how much of the state's charging is Level 2. Newer rapid sites usually take a contactless card, but rural units are more likely to expect a network app.
Three things to know
- Distances between towns are the real constraint, so plan on charge remaining at arrival, not distance covered.
- Summer heat inland drains range through air conditioning, so leave a bigger buffer than you would on the coast.
- Outside Perth a town often has one site, so have a fallback plan if it is occupied.
