Charging in Manitoba

Manitoba's charging sits almost entirely in Winnipeg, which holds the large majority of the province's locations, with a second useful cluster in Brandon. Beyond those two, coverage is sparse.

Around one port in five is DC fast, so most of what you'll see is Level 2 at hotels, malls, arenas and municipal lots. ChargePoint and flo run the biggest share, with Tesla, Sun Country Highway and Shell Recharge Solutions also on the map. Check which of those sit along your route before heading out of the city. Anything north of the settled south is effectively unserved, so treat that as a planning problem rather than a routing one.

On the road

The Trans-Canada, Highway 1, is the main run: Winnipeg west to Brandon and the Saskatchewan border, and east through the Whiteshell toward northwestern Ontario. Highway 75 heads south to the United States border at Emerson. Highway 6 runs north toward Thompson and is a long, thin route with very little charging, so plan that one stop by stop rather than assuming anything.

Plugs and payment

J1772 covers Level 2 and CCS1 is the usual DC fast connector, with NACS turning up at newer sites and some CHAdeMO left on older units. Level 2 posts come with a cable attached, so carry a portable cord for standard outlets instead. Expect to use a network app rather than a card reader at older installations.

Three things to know

Winnipeg winters are brutally cold. Plan on noticeably reduced range and slower charging for months at a time.
Block heater outlets are everywhere but they are not chargers; look for a proper Level 2 post.
The stretch east toward Ontario is long and empty. Leave Winnipeg or Kenora with plenty of margin.
