Charging in Newfoundland and Labrador

Charging here is concentrated in the St John's metro area. St John's itself and neighbouring Mount Pearl hold most of the province's locations, with Paradise adding a few and Conception Bay South almost nothing. Beyond the Avalon Peninsula the map is very sparse.

Only about one port in ten is DC fast, which is the real constraint in a province where driving distances are enormous. ChargePoint and flo run the most locations, with SWTCH, Sun Country Highway and Chargelab also present. If you're crossing the island, treat every charger as a planned stop rather than a convenience, and confirm it before you count on it.

On the road

Highway 1, the Trans-Canada, runs the length of the island from Port aux Basques, where the ferry lands, through Corner Brook and Gander to St John's. It is a long day's drive with big empty stretches between towns. Labrador's Trans-Labrador Highway is another matter entirely, remote enough that you plan charging, fuel and weather together well before setting off.

Plugs and payment

J1772 for Level 2 and CCS1 on the DC fast units, with NACS possible at newer sites and CHAdeMO on some older hardware. Level 2 posts have the cable attached; pack a portable cord for outlets as a fallback. Cellular coverage drops out between towns, so download network apps and set up payment before you actually need them.

Three things to know

  • Wind and driving snow cut range hard on the island; the forecast matters as much as the distance.
  • Ferry crossings from Nova Scotia are long. Arrive with charge rather than counting on a charger at the terminal.
  • Between towns on the Trans-Canada there is nothing. Never leave one without a comfortable margin.
