Charging in Northwest Territories

This is the thinnest coverage in the country. The Northwest Territories has only a handful of public charging locations, all of them in Yellowknife, and a correspondingly small number of ports. Outside the city there is effectively nothing.

The one bright spot is that nearly half of those few ports are DC fast, so Yellowknife itself is workable when the units are online. flo and ChargePoint are the networks you'll find. An EV here makes sense as a city car with home or workplace charging behind it; a long drive in or out of the territory is a trip planned around the very few places to plug in, with a large margin and a backup.

On the road

Highway 3 is the road into Yellowknife, branching off the Mackenzie Highway, Highway 1, which runs up from the Alberta border. These are long, sparsely populated routes where hundreds of kilometres can pass between services of any kind. Roads beyond Yellowknife and up the Mackenzie Valley are remote and partly unpaved, not something to attempt without knowing exactly where you can charge.

Plugs and payment

J1772 covers Level 2 and CCS1 the DC fast ports here. CHAdeMO may appear on older hardware, and NACS only where newer units have gone in. Level 2 posts have the cable attached; carry a portable cord that can draw from a standard outlet, because a plug at a hotel or lodge can end up being the practical fallback.

Three things to know

  • Winter here is extreme. Range loss is severe and charging is slow, so plan around much shorter legs.
  • With so few units in one city, always check a charger's status before driving across town to it.
  • Treat any drive out of Yellowknife as a planned expedition, not a route you improvise along the way.
