172 charging locations and 394 ports across 5 cities and towns, 48 of them DC fast.

Charging in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia's charging is overwhelmingly a Halifax Regional Municipality affair. Halifax and Dartmouth carry the bulk of the province's locations between them, with Bedford adding a few more and Sydney on Cape Breton holding only a handful.

Level 2 dominates: closer to one port in eight is DC fast, so most sites suit parking and charging rather than stopping mid-route. ChargePoint and flo run the most locations, with SWTCH, Chargelab and Tesla also on the map. Outside the capital region the network gets thin fast, and the province's shape means a lot of driving on peninsulas and coastlines where turning back for a charger costs real time.

On the road

Highway 102 connects Halifax to Truro, where Highway 104, the Trans-Canada, runs northeast to the Canso Causeway and Cape Breton and west toward New Brunswick. Highway 101 serves the Annapolis Valley and the Fundy shore. The Cabot Trail is the scenic loop most visitors want, and it is long, hilly and lightly served, so start it with a full battery.

Plugs and payment

J1772 covers Level 2 and CCS1 is the usual DC fast connector, with NACS showing up at newer installations and some CHAdeMO still around. Level 2 posts have the cable attached; a portable cord for ordinary outlets is the backup worth packing. Newer fast chargers often take a contactless card, but keep the main network apps installed for the older sites.

Three things to know

  • Cape Breton has far less charging than the mainland; leave Sydney or Port Hastings with plenty of range.
  • Salt air ages outdoor hardware, so check for a nearby alternative before relying on a single unit.
  • Ferry crossings and long peninsulas make detours expensive; charge before you commit to a side trip.
