Charging in Ontario

Ontario has the deepest coverage in Canada after Quebec, and it is packed into the Golden Horseshoe and Ottawa. Toronto alone runs to many hundreds of charging locations, with Ottawa, Mississauga, Etobicoke, London, Kitchener, Vaughan and Hamilton all well supplied.

The great bulk of it is Level 2: roughly one port in six is DC fast, which reflects how much of this is condo, office and mall charging rather than highway stops. ChargePoint, flo and SWTCH run the most locations, with Tesla and Chargelab also widespread. Head north or east of the settled south and the map changes character quickly, so long trips need more planning than the provincial total implies.

On the road

Highway 401 is the backbone, Windsor through Toronto to the Quebec border, and it links most of the cities where the charging is. The QEW wraps Lake Ontario toward Niagara, Highway 400 climbs to Barrie and cottage country, and Highway 417 covers Ottawa. Highway 17, the Trans-Canada along Lake Superior's north shore, is the hard one: long remote stretches where you plan each leg deliberately.

Plugs and payment

J1772 for Level 2 and CCS1 on most DC fast chargers, with NACS increasingly common at newer sites. Older units may still offer CHAdeMO. Level 2 posts in parking garages have the cable attached; bring a portable cord for outlets and any adapter your car needs. Tap to pay is normal on recent fast chargers; app access is still needed at plenty of others.

Three things to know

Downtown Toronto charging is mostly in parkades, so factor garage entry, height limits and parking fees into the stop.
Lake effect snow and cold cut winter range; northern routes need a bigger buffer than southern ones.
Cottage country fills up on summer weekends. Charge before you leave the 400-series highways, not after.
