Charging in Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan is a small network spread across a very big province. Saskatoon and Regina hold most of the charging locations, with modest clusters in Prince Albert and Moose Jaw, and long gaps in between.
The mix is better than the raw count suggests: roughly a third of ports are DC fast, so the sites that do exist are more likely to be useful mid-trip rather than only overnight. ChargePoint and flo run the most locations, with Tesla, Sun Country Highway and Electrify Canada also present. Outside the two cities and the main highways, assume you're on your own and plan each leg around a town you have confirmed has a working charger.
On the road
The Trans-Canada, Highway 1, crosses the south through Moose Jaw, Regina and Swift Current, and Highway 16, the Yellowhead, runs northwest through Saskatoon toward Alberta. Highway 11 links Regina and Saskatoon and is the main stretch between them. Fast charging clusters at the towns along these routes rather than spreading evenly, so the distances between usable stops can be long out on the prairie.
Plugs and payment
J1772 handles Level 2 and CCS1 is standard on DC fast units, with NACS appearing at newer sites. CHAdeMO survives here and there on older hardware. Level 2 posts have the cable attached; a portable cord for ordinary outlets is the useful backup out here. Payment is often through a network app, so set up accounts before you leave the city.
Three things to know
- Prairie winters are severe. Expect real range loss and leave a much larger buffer than the map distance suggests.
- Headwinds across open prairie cost more range than hills do; check the forecast on long east-west runs.
- Rural stops are often a single unit. Have a fallback town in mind before you commit to a leg.
