Charging in Yukon

Yukon's public charging is Whitehorse and very little else. The territory's entire listed count sits in and around the capital, which is where you will do essentially all of your charging.

The mix is better than the count: roughly a fifth of ports are DC fast, so Whitehorse does offer workable quick charging rather than only overnight posts. flo is the network you'll meet almost everywhere here. Beyond the city, assume nothing. Distances between settlements run to hundreds of kilometres, and driving the Klondike or the Alaska Highway in an EV is a planning exercise where you confirm each stop in advance and carry the means to charge slowly if you must.

On the road

The Alaska Highway runs southeast to northwest through Whitehorse and is the main route in and out of the territory. The Klondike Highway heads north to Dawson City and south toward Skagway. These are long, remote roads with settlements far apart, so charging along them is a matter of knowing exactly which stops exist rather than expecting to come across one.

Plugs and payment

J1772 handles Level 2 and CCS1 the DC fast ports, with CHAdeMO on some older units and NACS wherever newer hardware has arrived. Level 2 posts have their own cable; bring a portable cord that can draw from a standard outlet, since a plug at a lodge or campground may be the only option on a given night.

Three things to know

  • Extreme winter cold can halve usable range and slow charging badly; treat published range figures as optimistic.
  • Confirm chargers are live before setting out. One offline unit up here changes the whole trip.
  • Carry a portable cord so an ordinary outlet becomes a slow but genuine backup.
