Charging in Connacht

Connacht is thin on public charging by any measure, and what exists is concentrated in Galway city, with a smaller cluster in Sligo. Between and beyond them, across Mayo, Roscommon and Leitrim, you are dealing with individual sites in market towns rather than any kind of network density.

The rapid share is low too: only about one port in eight is rapid, so most of what you find is slower AC charging at hotels, car parks and community sites where you will be leaving the car for a while. EZO, Monta, ESB Ecars, ePower and GoCharge all appear, but coverage is patchy enough that planning the route matters more than picking a favourite network.

On the road

The M6 from Dublin into Galway is the province's strongest corridor, and the N4 up to Sligo and the N17 between the two cities are the other routes with any regular provision. Off those, on the N5 across Mayo, the N59 through Connemara or the coast roads out to Achill and Clifden, rapid charging is genuinely scarce; treat Galway, Sligo and the larger Mayo towns as your charging stops and plan the leg between them.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 for AC, CCS2 for rapid, and the occasional CHAdeMO cable left over from older cars. Untethered AC posts are the norm out here, so a Type 2 cable of your own is not optional. Payment is mixed: newer rapids take a contactless card, but older rural posts often expect an app or an RFID tag set up in advance.

  • Arrive in Galway or Sligo with real margin; the towns between them may offer only a single working post.
  • Atlantic weather is hard on rural kit, so have a fallback site in mind before committing to a remote stop.
  • Set up app accounts and an RFID tag before leaving the city; mobile signal in Connemara and Mayo can be patchy.
