Charging in Leinster

Leinster carries most of the Republic's public charging, and Dublin carries most of Leinster's: the capital alone accounts for roughly four in ten of the province's charging locations. Around it, Tallaght, Dún Laoghaire and Swords each hold a solid cluster of their own, while towns further out like Drogheda, Navan and Carlow run to a dozen or two apiece.

Roughly one port in five is rapid; the rest is slower AC charging in multi-storey car parks, hotel forecourts and retail parks, better suited to a long stay than a quick top-up. GoCharge and ESB Ecars account for the most locations, with EZO, ePower and Monta filling in much of the rest, so it is worth having more than one account ready.

On the road

Almost every national motorway radiates from Dublin, so most Leinster driving means the M50 orbital and one spoke off it: the M1 north through Drogheda and Dundalk, the M11 south past Bray, the M4 west, the M7 towards Limerick and the M9 to Waterford. Rapid charging on these routes concentrates at motorway service areas and at fuel forecourts just off the junctions, so plan stops around the named services rather than expecting something at every exit.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 is the standard for AC here, and rapid units are almost all CCS2, with a shrinking number of CHAdeMO cables kept alive for older cars. AC posts are usually untethered, so carry your own Type 2 cable and expect to need it. Contactless tap-to-pay is common on newer rapids, but app or RFID access still turns up on older AC posts.

Three things to know

Dublin city-centre charging often sits inside paid multi-storey car parks, so budget for the parking as well as the electricity.
Charge before joining the M50 at rush hour; a queue on the orbital eats range you planned on spending elsewhere.
Small Leinster towns lean on a handful of posts each, so check the map before assuming a mid-route stop will be free.
