Charging in Munster

Munster's charging follows its three cities. Cork and its suburbs, Douglas included, make up the largest concentration in the province, with Limerick and Waterford next; between them they hold most of what the province has. Ennis and Tralee each run to a dozen or two, and beyond those the map thins out quickly across west Cork, Kerry and the Clare coast.

The mix is better balanced than the location count suggests: close to a third of Munster's ports are rapid, so long trips are workable even where sites sit far apart. EZO and ESB Ecars cover the most locations, with ePower and Monta also widely present, so it pays to have a couple of apps set up before you head west.

On the road

The M8 between Cork and Dublin is the province's main artery, with rapid charging clustered at its service areas and at the towns just off it. The N20 up to Limerick, the M18 towards Ennis and Galway, and the N25 east to Waterford are workable but sparser. Head onto the Ring of Kerry, the Beara and Dingle peninsulas or into west Cork and the gaps get long, so top up in the last decent-sized town.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 sockets on the AC posts, CCS2 on the rapids, and CHAdeMO only as a legacy fitting that is slowly disappearing. Most AC units are untethered, so keep a Type 2 cable in the boot, especially for hotel and car park charging in Kerry and west Cork. Card readers are common on newer rapids; older kit may want an app.

Three things to know

  • Coastal wind and rain make outdoor rapids unpleasant, so a covered forecourt site is worth a short detour in winter.
  • Tourist routes in Kerry and west Cork fill up in summer, so allow for a wait at single-unit sites.
  • Cork's charging is spread across suburbs like Douglas rather than one central hub, so pick your side of the city.
