Charging in Ulster

This is the thinnest coverage anywhere in Ireland. Public charging in the Ulster counties of the Republic, Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan, amounts to a small handful of locations, and Letterkenny accounts for essentially all of the ones we list. Beyond it, expect the odd single unit in a town and long stretches of road with nothing at all.

The upside is that a decent share of the ports here are rapid, so the sites that do exist are often useful ones rather than slow overnight posts. ESB Ecars and EZO appear most often, with InstaVolt, Stop N Top and ChargePoint also present. Treat every charge as a planned stop, not something you fit in on the way.

On the road

The main routes are the N2 up from Dublin through Monaghan, the N3 through Cavan, and the N15 and N13 linking Sligo, Donegal town, Letterkenny and the border. Letterkenny is the one place along them with real choice. On the N56 around the Donegal coast and out to the peninsulas, gaps between locations are long and hilly, and roads that look short on the map take much longer to drive.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 on AC posts and CCS2 on rapids, with CHAdeMO surviving only on a few older units. Carry your own Type 2 cable, since untethered posts are the rule. Contactless payment is common on newer rapid units, but bring an app or RFID tag as backup, and if you are crossing the border, check your app covers charging on both sides.

Three things to know

  • Fill up in Letterkenny before heading into the Donegal peninsulas; the coast road offers very little between towns.
  • Winter wind and hill climbs on Donegal roads cut range, so leave a bigger reserve than the route suggests.
  • With single units at most sites, always have a second location picked in case the first is busy or offline.
