Charging in Auckland

Auckland carries far more public charging than any other region on this map, and it is spread across the isthmus rather than packed into the city centre. Central Auckland has the biggest single cluster, but Remuera, Otara, Manukau City and Papatoetoe each hold a useful set of their own.

Roughly four in ten ports here are rapid, a high share for New Zealand, and it reflects how many sites sit on fuel forecourts and at shopping centres. ChargeNet NZ covers the widest ground, BP EV Charging and Z Energy hold the forecourt sites, and Vector adds more around the city.

On the road

State Highway 1 runs the length of the region, from the Northern Motorway at Silverdale down through the harbour crossing and out past the Bombay Hills. SH16 heads northwest towards Kumeu and SH20 links the airport to the southwest. Charging along these motorways is mostly at forecourts and malls just off the exits, so pick the stop before you join, not after.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 handles AC charging and CCS2 the rapid units. CHAdeMO is still worth checking for, since plenty of used Japanese imports on Auckland roads use it. Rapid chargers carry their own cables, while AC posts often do not, so keep a Type 2 lead in the boot. Most sites take a card or an app.

Three things to know

  • Auckland traffic swings wildly at peak, so budget extra range rather than arriving at a rapid charger on a few percent.
  • Shopping centre and supermarket car parks hold many locations. Check the parking time limit before settling in for a long AC session.
  • Heading north or south out of the region, top up in Auckland: coverage thins quickly past Warkworth and the Bombay Hills.
