Charging in Bay of Plenty

Two centres carry Bay of Plenty charging between them. Tauranga has the larger share and Rotorua is not far behind, which suits how people move through the region: coast in summer, lakes and forest year round.

The rapid share is high, around four in ten ports, so a proper mid-trip top-up is realistic rather than an all-afternoon wait. ChargeNet NZ leads, with Kiwi EV, Tesla and Chargefox filling in around it. East towards Opotiki and the Coast the coverage thins out, and that is the part of a trip worth planning first.

On the road

State Highway 2 runs the coast from the Waihi end through Tauranga and on to Whakatane and Opotiki. SH29 climbs the Kaimai Range from Waikato, SH5 links Rotorua with Taupo, and SH30 crosses from Rotorua to the eastern bay. The two city clusters cover most of this, but the eastern end of SH2 is a long run on its own.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 for AC, CCS2 for rapid charging, with CHAdeMO still present on plenty of used imports. Most rapid units are tethered, so bring your own Type 2 cable for car park posts. Apps dominate payment, though tap-to-pay is turning up on newer rapid sites.

Three things to know

Summer brings holiday traffic to Tauranga and Mount Maunganui, so charge outside peak beach hours if you can.
Rotorua's chargers make a good pause between Auckland and the east coast; sightseeing time covers a rapid session.
Heading east past Opotiki, treat Whakatane as your last reliable top-up and leave with plenty of range.
