Charging in Canterbury

Canterbury has the most charging in the South Island, and it is better spread than the totals suggest. Christchurch dominates, but Ashburton, Timaru and Rolleston each hold their own small set, which matters on a plain where the towns are a long way apart.

Around a third of the ports are rapid, so the north to south run through the region works well. ChargeNet NZ and Zero lead, with BP EV Charging and Z Energy on the forecourts. It is the alpine routes west and inland, not the plains, where charging gets sparse.

On the road

State Highway 1 crosses the whole region, coming down the Kaikoura coast, through Christchurch and on past Ashburton and Timaru towards Oamaru. State Highway 73 climbs Arthur's Pass to the West Coast, State Highway 8 runs through Burkes Pass into the Mackenzie Basin, and SH72 offers an inland alternative to the plains route. The passes are where you need a plan.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 for AC, CCS2 for rapid charging, and CHAdeMO for the older imports that are still common here. Rapid chargers are tethered, while town car park posts often are not, so carry your Type 2 cable. Apps handle most payments, with contactless spreading on newer rapid sites.

Three things to know

Alpine passes are cold and often snowy in winter, which cuts range. Charge fully in town before crossing.
The nor'west wind across the plains can eat range on a long straight run. Do not cut it fine.
Christchurch is your last wide choice of chargers before Arthur's Pass or the Mackenzie. Use it.
