Charging in Hawke's Bay Region

Hawke's Bay charging is a Hastings and Napier affair. Between them the twin cities hold what the region has, with Hastings a little ahead, and the surrounding fruit and wine country leans on those two centres rather than having much of its own.

Roughly a third of the ports are rapid, enough for a working top-up but without much redundancy if a site is busy or offline. ChargeNet NZ is the main name here, with Chargefox and Tesla also present. Pick a second option before you actually need one, especially on a weekend.

On the road

State Highway 2 is the spine, running Napier to Hastings and on south through Waipukurau and Dannevirke towards the Wairarapa, or north along the coast to Wairoa. State Highway 5, the Napier to Taupo road, climbs inland over exposed country with very little along the way. SH50 gives you an inland alternative between the two main towns.

Plugs and payment

You will use Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for rapid charging here, with CHAdeMO still relevant to older Japanese imports. Cellar doors and orchard cafes that offer charging are almost always slower AC, so carry a Type 2 cable. Payment runs mostly through a network app.

Three things to know

The Napier to Taupo road is long, high and thinly served. Start it with a full battery.
Wine touring runs on slow charging. Treat a cellar door plug as a top-up, not a fill.
Napier and Hastings are twenty minutes apart, so a busy charger in one is not a crisis.
