Charging in Marlborough

Marlborough's charging is concentrated in Blenheim, and for once that is convenient: the town sits where the ferry traffic, the wine country and the coast road all meet. There is very little elsewhere in the region, so Blenheim is the stop to plan around.

More than half the ports here are rapid, an unusually high share, which fits a place most people are passing through rather than staying in. ChargeNet NZ, BP EV Charging, Hikotron and Tesla all appear, so it is worth having a couple of accounts ready before you land.

On the road

State Highway 1 runs from the Picton ferry terminal down to Blenheim, then along the Kaikoura coast towards Canterbury. State Highway 6 climbs over the saddles to Nelson, and State Highway 63 heads up the Wairau Valley towards St Arnaud and the Lewis Pass routes. The Kaikoura coast leg is long, exposed and short on charging.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for rapid, with CHAdeMO still around on older imported cars. Rapid units are tethered; vineyard and accommodation chargers usually are not, so carry a Type 2 cable. Most sites want an app, and newer rapid ones increasingly take a contactless tap.

Three things to know

  • Straight off the ferry, Blenheim is the practical first charge before the long Kaikoura coast run south.
  • Wine touring means slow AC at cellar doors and lodges. Save the rapid units for actual travel legs.
  • Summer here is dry and busy, so expect the Blenheim chargers to see plenty of use.
