Charging in Nelson Region

Nelson is a small region and its charging is small too. Stoke actually carries more locations than Nelson city itself, and between them they cover nearly everything on the map here, so you plan around those two rather than expecting options along the way.

About a third of the ports are rapid, enough to make a through trip work if you time it. Zero, ChargeNet NZ and BP EV Charging are the names to have set up. For a longer stay, overnight AC charging where you are staying is the simplest answer.

On the road

State Highway 6 arrives from Blenheim over the Whangamoa and Rai saddles, and leaves southwest through Richmond towards Murchison, the Buller Gorge and the West Coast. State Highway 60 crosses Takaka Hill to Motueka and Golden Bay. All of these are winding, climbing roads, so treat the map distance as optimistic and the charge you need as higher than flat driving.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 for AC, CCS2 for rapid, CHAdeMO for the older imports. Untethered posts are common in a region this size, so bring a Type 2 cable rather than assuming one is attached. Get the network apps working while you still have good mobile coverage in town.

Three things to know

  • Charge in Nelson or Stoke before Golden Bay or the Abel Tasman; there is little past Takaka Hill.
  • Takaka Hill and the saddles east are steep both ways. Regeneration helps coming down, but leave margin going up.
  • The region is sunny and mild, so range holds up well; hills and distance matter far more than cold.
