Charging in Northland

Northland is thin on public charging. Whangarei accounts for nearly everything the map shows in the region, and beyond it the coverage is scattered rather than continuous. Plan around the towns you know have chargers, and treat anywhere further north as a place to arrive with charge rather than find it.

Under a third of the ports here are rapid, so most of what you will use is slower AC charging at car parks, motels and community sites. ChargeNet NZ has the main presence, with Tesla adding sites. Overnight charging where you stay is the dependable option on a Northland trip.

On the road

State Highway 1 comes north from Auckland through Wellsford and Whangarei, then on through Kawakawa towards Kaitaia. State Highway 10 branches off to Kerikeri and the Bay of Islands, and State Highway 12 loops the Kauri Coast through Dargaville and the Hokianga. These are two-lane, winding roads where the drive takes longer than the map suggests, and charging thins out fast north of Whangarei.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 for AC charging and CCS2 for rapid units, with CHAdeMO still worth checking since many used Japanese imports carry it. Carry your own Type 2 cable, because untethered posts at motels and town car parks are common up here. Set up your app accounts before you leave, as mobile coverage is uneven.

Three things to know

  • Whangarei is your main charging base. Fill up there before heading for the Far North or the Kauri Coast.
  • Northland roads are winding and slower than the distance suggests, and range drops on the hills, so leave margin.
  • Book accommodation with a plug where you can. An overnight AC charge beats hunting for a free rapid unit.
