Charging in Otago

Otago is a large region with very little public charging on the map, and almost all of what there is sits in Dunedin. That means planning: outside the city, assume nothing, confirm before you set off, and give yourself far more margin than a North Island trip needs.

Only a handful of ports are rapid, and ChargeNet NZ is the one network with real presence, so a single app covers most of it. For trips into Central Otago, overnight AC charging where you stay is the reliable backbone and any daytime charge is a bonus.

On the road

State Highway 1 runs the coast from Oamaru through Dunedin and south to Balclutha. State Highway 8 heads inland through the Lindis Pass into the Central Otago basins, joining State Highway 6 towards Wanaka and Queenstown, while SH85 and SH87 provide the inland back routes. These are long distances between small settlements, and the inland climbs are serious.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 handles AC and CCS2 the rapid units, with CHAdeMO still fitted to plenty of older imported cars. Untethered posts are the norm outside the main sites, so a Type 2 cable is not optional here. Set your apps up in town while coverage is good.

Three things to know

  • Central Otago swings from hot summers to hard frosts, and cold batteries charge slower. Allow extra time in winter.
  • Dunedin is steep and hilly, so short trips use more than you expect. Leave with a good buffer.
  • Book accommodation with a plug for inland trips; overnight AC is more dependable than finding a charger.
