Charging in Southland

Southland has very little public charging, and almost all of it is in Invercargill. Just as important, hardly any of it is rapid: most ports are slower AC, so charging here is something you do while parked rather than something you fit into a fifteen minute stop.

Zero and ChargeNet NZ are the networks to have. Plan the region around Invercargill and your accommodation, and treat any charger you find in a smaller town as a bonus. On long days out, leave with a full battery rather than expecting to top up en route.

On the road

State Highway 1 runs from Invercargill through Gore and on towards Balclutha and Dunedin. State Highway 6 heads north via Lumsden towards Queenstown, State Highway 99 is the Southern Scenic Route out to Riverton and Te Anau, and State Highway 94 carries on to Milford Sound. That Milford road is a long alpine return trip with almost nothing along it.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for the few rapid units, with CHAdeMO still on many older imports down here. Bring a Type 2 cable, because untethered posts at motels and car parks are the common case. Get your app accounts working before you head out of town.

Three things to know

Milford Sound is a long return drive with no charging. Leave Te Anau or Invercargill with a full battery.
Cold, wind and rain are normal here, and all three reduce range. Add margin to every leg.
With almost everything on slow AC, plan overnight charges rather than expecting a quick mid-journey top-up.
