Charging in Taranaki Region

Taranaki has very few charging locations, but the ones it has are built for travel rather than lingering. Almost all of them sit in New Plymouth, and a striking share of the region's ports are rapid, so a short stop generally gets you moving again.

Z Energy and ChargeNet NZ carry most of it, with Tesla and EVBox also on the map. What the region lacks is spread: away from New Plymouth there is very little, and the coastal and inland routes around the mountain are long enough that you should plan the whole loop before starting it.

On the road

State Highway 3 is the lifeline, running north through Mount Messenger and the Awakino Gorge towards Waikato, and south through Hawera to Whanganui. State Highway 45, the coastal road around the mountain, makes a full loop with New Plymouth at the top. The northern run in particular is remote, slow and short on places to stop.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 handles AC, CCS2 the rapid chargers, and CHAdeMO turns up on the older imported cars common in provincial New Zealand. Rapid units bring their own cables, while town car park posts often expect yours. Have a network app installed before you arrive rather than in the car park.

Three things to know

  • Leave New Plymouth full before the Awakino Gorge run north; it is remote and there is nothing en route.
  • The Surf Highway loop around the mountain has no charging of its own, so treat it as a round trip.
  • Coastal wind and steady rain both cost range here. Add margin rather than trusting the trip computer.
