Charging in Wellington Region

Wellington's charging follows its geography: a long line of it around the harbour, up the Hutt Valley and along the Kapiti Coast, with Masterton covering the Wairarapa on the far side of the hill. The city itself has the largest cluster and Lower Hutt is the next real concentration.

Only about one port in five is rapid, so most of what you see is slower AC in parking buildings, council car parks and workplaces. ChargeNet NZ and Zero are the main names, with Z Energy on the forecourts and Thundergrid also present around the region.

On the road

State Highway 1 runs north out of the city up the Kapiti Coast through Porirua and Paraparaumu towards Levin. State Highway 2 heads up the Hutt Valley and over the Remutaka Hill to Masterton and the Wairarapa, with SH58 joining the two. The Cook Strait ferries leave from the harbour, so this is also your last dense charging before the South Island.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for rapid charging, with CHAdeMO still worth filtering for if you drive an older import. Parking building posts are often untethered, so a Type 2 cable earns its space in the boot. Payment is app-led, with contactless appearing on newer rapid units.

Before a Cook Strait crossing, charge on this side; your options in Marlborough are limited once you land.
Wellington is steep and windy, and both cost range. Arrive with more buffer than a flat city needs.
