Charging in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is compact, and so is its charging map. Belfast holds the most locations by far, with Castlereagh next and a steady scattering across Lisburn, Newtownabbey, Craigavon, Bangor, Portadown and Derry. Smaller towns like Newtownards and Carrickfergus have only a handful, and rural Fermanagh, Tyrone and the Antrim coast are thinner still.
The strong point is the rapid share: close to four in ten ports here are rapid, the highest proportion of the UK nations. ESB Ecars leads by number of locations and also runs sites south of the border, useful if you drive both. Weev and EZO come next, with POD Point and ChargePoint filling in.
On the road
The M1 southwest from Belfast to Dungannon, the M2 north towards Ballymena, the A1 down to Newry and the border, and the A6 across to Derry carry most of the long trips, and none of them takes long to drive. Distances are short enough that corridor charging matters less here than knowing which town on your route has a working rapid.
Plugs and payment
Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for rapid, with CHAdeMO still on some older units. Untethered posts are common, so keep a Type 2 cable with you. Contactless is spreading on newer rapids, but older network sites can still want an app or card, and a cross-border trip is easier with the relevant account already set up.
Three things to know
- The whole region is drivable in a couple of hours, so charge in Belfast or a main town rather than chasing rural sites.
- If you cross into the Republic regularly, sort out an account that works on both sides before you travel.
- Coastal and lakeland routes have sparse charging, so start those day trips with a full battery and margin.
