Charging in Scotland
Charging in Scotland concentrates in the Central Belt. Glasgow leads clearly, with Edinburgh next, then Aberdeen and Dundee, and Paisley, Hamilton, East Kilbride, Dunfermline and Livingston filling in around them. North and west of Perth the map opens out, and the Highlands and islands rely on a much thinner spread of village and car park sites.
The rapid share is notably strong: more than a quarter of ports are rapid, higher than the UK picture overall. Chargeplace Scotland is the largest network by locations and reaches well beyond the cities, with POD Point, Osprey Charging, InstaVolt and BP Pulse adding depth in the Central Belt and along the trunk roads.
On the road
The M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh, the M74 south to the border, the M90 and A9 north to Perth and Inverness, plus the A96 to Aberdeen, carry most long-distance driving and are reasonably covered. The A82 through Glen Coe and the North Coast 500 loop are a different matter: fewer sites, longer gaps, and a real chance the one rapid in a village is already occupied.
Plugs and payment
Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for rapid charging, with some CHAdeMO still around on older units. Plenty of council-installed posts are untethered, so carry a Type 2 cable. Contactless works on many newer rapids, but some network sites still expect an app or a card, so set those up before heading north.
Three things to know
- Cold winter mornings cut range and slow charging; give the battery time to warm before expecting full rapid speed.
- In the Highlands treat each rapid as a single point of failure and always keep a fallback town in reach.
- Ferry ports and island villages have limited charging, so arrive with margin rather than counting on a top-up on arrival.
