Charging in Wales

Wales has a coverage map shaped by its geography. Nearly everything sits along the southern coastal belt, with Cardiff, Newport and Swansea leading and Barry, Bridgend and Llanelli adding a smaller cluster each; Wrexham and Buckley cover the northeast. The Valleys towns like Rhondda and Tonypandy have only a few locations apiece, and mid-Wales has no town large enough to anchor a cluster at all.

Against that, the rapid share is decent: getting on for three ports in ten are rapid, so where a site exists it is often a useful one. Connected Kerb and POD Point lead by number of locations, with Silverstone Green Energy, The GeniePoint Network and BP Pulse also well represented.

On the road

The M4 along the south coast from the Severn crossing through Newport, Cardiff and Swansea is the best-served route by a distance. The A55 across the north coast to Holyhead is the other reliable spine. The A470 running north to south through the middle of the country, and the A483 up the border, are far thinner, with long rural stretches between charging stops.

Plugs and payment

Type 2 handles AC charging and CCS2 the rapids, with CHAdeMO lingering on older kit. Many council and car park posts are untethered, so carry a Type 2 cable. Contactless tap-to-pay is fairly common on newer rapid units, but keep one or two network apps installed for the older posts in smaller towns.

Three things to know

Charge in the coastal towns before heading inland; the Valleys and mid-Wales have far fewer locations than the M4 belt.
Mountain routes and headwinds eat range, so plan the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) and Eryri (Snowdonia) legs with extra buffer.
Summer weekends in Pembrokeshire and Eryri bring visitors, and the few rapid sites there fill up quickly.
