Charging in Arizona
Arizona's charging is heavily weighted to the Phoenix metro. The city itself has around 200 locations, and the East Valley adds a lot more through Tempe, Chandler and Scottsdale, so the combined metro accounts for most of the state. Tucson is the main centre outside it. Mesa, Gilbert, Glendale and Peoria all look modest against their populations, so coverage inside the metro is uneven from one suburb to the next.
Roughly one port in five is DC fast, meaning the bulk is Level 2 at workplaces, apartment complexes, malls and resorts. ChargePoint has the most locations, followed by Blink Charging and Tesla, with AmpUp and Shell Recharge Solutions also present. Northern Arizona is much thinner than the Sun Corridor.
On the road
I-10 carries the Sun Corridor between Phoenix and Tucson, then runs west toward California and southeast toward New Mexico, and it is the best-served route. I-17 climbs north from Phoenix to Flagstaff, a big elevation change that costs more energy than the distance suggests. I-40 crosses the north from Kingman through Flagstaff, while I-8 to Yuma and I-19 south to Nogales are quieter with fewer options.
Plugs and payment
Level 2 uses J1772 with attached cables. DC fast sites are CCS1 with Tesla connectors alongside, and NACS is showing up on newer stalls, so bring your adapter. CHAdeMO is legacy. Contactless card payment is fairly common around Phoenix and Tucson on recent hardware; older garage and workplace units in the metro often still expect the network app.
Three things to know
- Summer heat is the main constraint: air conditioning and hot batteries both cut how far a charge goes.
- Charge overnight or early morning in the desert; midday stalls in full sun are slower and unpleasant.
- Northbound on I-17 to Flagstaff climbs thousands of feet, so leave Phoenix with more charge than the distance implies.
