Charging in California

California has more public charging than any other state, and the map shows it. Los Angeles alone carries close to 1,900 charging locations, San Jose sits near 800, and San Francisco and San Diego each land at a few hundred. Density follows the coast and the Bay Area.

Inland the picture thins. Fresno and Bakersfield, both large cities, come in under a hundred locations each, so the Central Valley leans on fewer, busier sites. Roughly a quarter of the state's ports are DC fast; the rest is Level 2 in garages, workplaces and shopping centers. ChargePoint and Tesla lead by site count, with Blink Charging, eVgo Network and Shell Recharge Solutions filling in.

On the road

I-5 runs the length of the state and is the busiest EV route, with US-101 the slower coastal alternative and CA-99 threading the Central Valley towns. I-80 climbs from Sacramento over Donner Pass toward Nevada, and I-15 and I-10 carry desert traffic east and south. Fast charging is dense at the metro ends of these routes and stretches out through the valley, the Mojave and the mountain passes.

Plugs and payment

Most Level 2 posts here use J1772 and come with a tethered cable, so you rarely need your own. DC fast sites mix CCS1 and NACS, and NACS connectors are increasingly common on non-Tesla networks. CHAdeMO still appears at older sites but is legacy. Contactless tap-to-pay is common on newer fast chargers, while Level 2 often wants an app.

Three things to know

  • Charge before crossing the Sierra Nevada or the Mojave; passes and desert stretches have far fewer sites than the coast.
  • In Los Angeles and the Bay Area, look for garage and workplace Level 2 rather than hunting scarce street posts.
  • Summer heat in the Central Valley slows charging; park in shade and expect lower peak rates than the label suggests.
