Charging in Colorado

Almost everything sits on the Front Range. Denver carries over 400 charging locations on its own, with Aurora and Centennial around a hundred each and Fort Collins close behind. Colorado Springs, despite its size, shows under fifty, so the south end of the corridor is thinner than the population suggests. Statewide, roughly one port in five is DC fast, so most of what you find is Level 2.

ChargePoint has the most locations, followed by Blink Charging and Tesla, with eVgo Network and EVGateway filling in. Level 2 dominates the city counts: garages, hotels, trailheads and ski-area lots. Off the Front Range, in the San Luis Valley and on the eastern plains, gaps get long fast.

On the road

I-25 is the spine, linking Fort Collins, Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo, and most of the state's charging sits along it. I-70 climbs west over the passes toward Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction, so plan that leg around elevation rather than distance. I-76 northeast and US 50 through the southern half are much sparser, and the mountain highways between them can go a long way between towns.

Plugs and payment

Level 2 posts are J1772. DC fast sites are mostly CCS1 alongside Tesla connectors, with NACS spreading as newer stalls open and adapters covering the rest. A few older CHAdeMO cables survive. Level 2 stations are nearly all cable-attached, so you rarely need your own. Tap-to-pay card readers are common on newer DC sites but not universal, so keep the network apps loaded.

Three things to know

Cold and altitude both cut range: expect noticeably less on winter mountain runs than the dashboard predicts at first.
Charge before climbing I-70 westbound, not after; the pass eats charge, though descents give some back through regen.
Ski weekends fill resort and gateway-town chargers by mid-morning, so plug in overnight in the valley instead.
