EV charging stations in Connecticut

1,550 charging locations and 5,460 ports across 48 cities and towns, 1,048 of them DC fast.

Charging in Connecticut

Connecticut spreads its charging across several centres rather than one. Hartford and New Haven lead, with Stamford, New Britain, Norwalk, Bridgeport, Waterbury and Danbury all holding meaningful clusters, so the map looks more even here than in most states of similar size.

Around one port in five is DC fast, a reasonable balance, but the bulk is Level 2 at office parks, town lots, universities and retail plazas. ChargePoint has the most locations, and alongside AmpUp, Tesla and Blink Charging you will also meet Loop, which makes the top networks here but not in the neighbouring states. Knowing which networks cover your regular stops saves a lot of app juggling.

On the road

I-95 runs the shoreline from Greenwich through Bridgeport and New Haven to the Rhode Island line, and it is the busiest route in the state. I-91 links New Haven to Hartford and the north, and I-84 crosses from Danbury through Waterbury to Hartford. The Merritt Parkway is the pleasant alternative, but its service areas are small and few, so charge off the interstates rather than counting on it.

Plugs and payment

J1772 for Level 2, CCS1 with NACS at fast sites, plus CHAdeMO at some older installations. Untethered posts are the rule, so keep a cable in the car. Contactless payment is common on newer highway chargers, while workplace and town-lot posts often need the network app, and a few are restricted to permit holders.

Three things to know

  • Shoreline commuter traffic peaks hard morning and evening, so avoid timing an I-95 stop into rush hour.
  • Many workplace and campus posts are public only outside business hours, so check access before relying on one.
  • The northwest hills are thinner than the coast, so fill up in Danbury or Torrington before heading up.
