Charging in Delaware

Delaware is small enough to cross in an afternoon, and its charging follows the same short north-south line. The northern corner around Wilmington and Newark holds the densest cluster, Dover adds a working set of sites around the capital, and Middletown covers the middle of the state with a handful more.

Most of what you will find is Level 2 at workplaces, hotels and shopping centers, but the DC fast share is high for a state this size: more than a third of ports can add real range in minutes. ChargePoint and Blink Charging run the widest coverage, with Tesla, Electrify America and flo filling in the gaps.

On the road

I-95 clips the top of the state through Newark and Wilmington on the run between Baltimore and Philadelphia, and that stretch is the best served in Delaware. South of the canal, DE 1 and US 13 carry most traffic toward Dover and the Atlantic beaches, where charging thins out and clusters around towns rather than along the road itself. Plan a stop before you turn off for the coast.

Plugs and payment

J1772 handles Level 2 here, CCS1 and NACS split the fast chargers, and a few CHAdeMO units linger for older cars. Level 2 posts usually have a tethered cable, but not always, so keep a portable J1772 lead in the car. Tap-to-pay is common at newer fast sites; older posts may still want the network app.

Three things to know

Beach traffic on DE 1 gets heavy in summer; charge in Dover or Middletown rather than waiting at the coast.
Winters are mild but damp, and cold mornings still trim range, so precondition while plugged in at your hotel.
Wilmington and Newark garages carry most of the Level 2; charge overnight there and save fast charging for through trips.
