Charging in Florida

Florida has a large charging footprint, and it is spread across several metros rather than one. Miami leads, with Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and St. Petersburg each carrying substantial counts, so the southeast coast and the I-4 belt are both well served.

Coverage is patchier than the state total suggests once you leave those metros. Jacksonville is thinner than its size implies, and Cape Coral barely registers. Roughly a quarter of all ports are DC fast, a strong ratio, so intercity travel is realistic here. ChargePoint and Blink Charging hold the most sites, with Tesla, ChargeUp and SemaConnect behind them.

On the road

I-95 down the Atlantic side and I-75 down the Gulf side are the two spines, joined across the middle by I-4 between Tampa and Daytona Beach. Florida's Turnpike carries its own service plazas. The long crossing of I-75 through the Everglades and the run south to the Keys are the two places to set off with a full battery.

Plugs and payment

J1772 covers Level 2, while CCS1 and NACS split the DC fast sites and plenty of newer stalls carry both cables. CHAdeMO is legacy. Card readers are spreading, but app-only units persist, so install the main network apps before a road trip rather than at the stall. Public posts have the cable attached; carry an adapter for the other fast standard.

Three things to know

Heat and humidity keep the air conditioning running, so budget extra range on summer drives through the interior.
Charge early before storm season travel, since an area-wide power outage takes its charging stations down too.
Southwest Florida is thin outside the metros, so plan those trips around Tampa or the Miami area.
