Charging in Hawaii

Hawaii's charging is concentrated on Oahu. Honolulu holds well over a hundred locations, and the ring of communities around it, from Pearl City and Waipahu to Kapolei and the Salt Lake area, adds dozens more, so the island's urban core is well covered.

The neighbor islands are much thinner. Hilo, the largest town on Hawaii Island, has little more than a dozen locations. Around one port in seven is DC fast, so this is largely a Level 2 network, which suits short island driving. ChargePoint and OpConnect lead by site count, followed by Shell Recharge Solutions, Blink Charging and Tesla.

On the road

There are no long-haul distances here, but Oahu has interstate-numbered freeways: H-1 across Honolulu, H-2 north into the center of the island, and H-3 through the Koolau range to the windward side. Charging follows H-1 and the Honolulu to Kapolei corridor closely. On Hawaii Island the Belt Road circles the coast, and on Maui and Kauai the coastal highways are the whole network, so check the map before setting out.

Plugs and payment

J1772 with a tethered cable on Level 2, CCS1 and NACS on DC fast, CHAdeMO only on older units. Many hotel and resort chargers are Level 2 and expect an app, and some are limited to guests. Tap-to-pay turns up on newer fast chargers in Honolulu but is not something to count on elsewhere.

Three things to know

Charge overnight where you stay; island distances are short and Level 2 easily covers a day's driving.
Salt air and strong sun age outdoor equipment, so keep a second nearby site in mind if one fails.
Some listed locations sit on military bases and are not open to the public; check access before relying on them.
