2,510 charging locations and 8,045 ports across 124 cities and towns, 2,650 of them DC fast.

Charging in Illinois

Illinois has one of the deepest charging networks in the Midwest and Chicago holds a large chunk of it. The collar counties add genuine depth, with Naperville, Elgin, Aurora, Joliet and Waukegan all carrying their own clusters, so the northeast corner is easy driving. Downstate reads differently: Rockford, Peoria and Springfield have modest counts for cities of their size.

About a third of Illinois ports are DC fast, a strong ratio, which makes long trips through the state straightforward on the main routes. ChargePoint leads on number of locations, followed by Tesla, Blink Charging, Shell Recharge Solutions and EVgo.

On the road

Chicago is the hinge. I-90 and I-94 come in from Wisconsin and Indiana, I-55 runs southwest through Springfield toward St. Louis, I-57 heads straight down to Champaign and the far south, and I-80 crosses below the city. Fast charging along those interstates is solid, though I-57 south of Effingham and the rural stretches of I-70 feel much emptier than the map around Chicago suggests.

Plugs and payment

J1772 for Level 2, CCS1 for most DC fast, NACS increasingly available alongside it and at Tesla sites, and CHAdeMO only on older units. City posts almost always carry their own cables. Tap-to-pay is fairly common on newer fast chargers in and around Chicago and less reliable downstate, so keep a couple of apps ready.

Three things to know

  • Much Chicago charging is in paid garages, so factor parking cost and clearance in before picking a downtown stop.
  • Downstate spacing is wider; on I-57 or I-55 top up at the larger towns rather than pushing between them.
  • Winter wind off Lake Michigan cuts range hard, so precondition while plugged in and leave buffer on cold mornings.
