Charging in Indiana

Indiana is thin for its size. Indianapolis has fewer charging locations than you would expect for a city of its population, and the college towns nearly even things out: Lafayette almost matches the capital and Bloomington is not far behind, on the back of campus parking. Carmel and Fishers add suburban coverage north of the city, Fort Wayne and South Bend hold their own, while Gary currently shows none at all.

The compensation is speed rather than spread: close to a third of Indiana's ports are DC fast, so highway stops are better served than the raw location count suggests. ChargePoint and Tesla lead, with Blink Charging, EV Connect and AmpUp filling in.

On the road

Indianapolis is the hub. I-65 runs from Gary down to Louisville, I-70 crosses from Terre Haute to Richmond, I-69 heads northeast to Fort Wayne and I-74 comes in from Illinois and continues southeast toward Cincinnati, while the Indiana Toll Road carries I-80/90 across the top past South Bend. Fast charging tends to sit at interchanges and travel plazas rather than in the small towns between them, so aim for the exits.

Plugs and payment

J1772 covers Level 2 and CCS1 the bulk of DC fast, with NACS appearing at newer sites and at Tesla's. CHAdeMO is legacy only. Cables are attached at almost every Level 2 post. Contactless readers are common on newer fast chargers, but rural sites often still expect you to use the network app.

Three things to know

  • Coverage is thin statewide, so plan around Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend and the college towns rather than between them.
  • Gary and the northwest lakeshore show very little; Chicago-area charging is often the practical stop for that corner.
  • Campus and city-garage chargers in Lafayette and Bloomington can be permit-restricted, so check access before you rely on one.
