EV charging stations in Kansas
449 charging locations and 1,059 ports across 23 cities and towns, 205 of them DC fast.
Charging in Kansas
Kansas charging is concentrated in the Kansas City suburbs. Kansas City, Overland Park, Lenexa and Olathe between them account for more than half the state's locations, and Johnson County is denser than anywhere else. Wichita, by far the biggest city, has surprisingly few, which is something to plan around rather than assume away.
Roughly one port in five is DC fast, so most of what you see on the map is Level 2 at workplaces, hotels and civic lots. ChargePoint has the widest spread of locations, ahead of Tesla and Blink Charging, with Shell Recharge Solutions and eVgo Network adding to the fast side.
On the road
I-70 crosses the whole state, Kansas City to Topeka to Salina and on west toward Colorado, and the western half of that run is where spacing gets long. I-35, the Kansas Turnpike for much of its length, links Wichita to Emporia and the Kansas City metro. US-54 and US-400 head southwest into thinly served country. Charge before the open plains stretches rather than during them.
Plugs and payment
J1772 covers Level 2, CCS1 covers most DC fast, and NACS is showing up on newer hardware as well as on Tesla's own posts. Older CHAdeMO cables still turn up at a handful of sites. Cables are attached at nearly every Level 2 post, and contactless payment is more common around the Kansas City suburbs than out west.
Three things to know
- Wichita has fewer locations than its size implies; pick a hotel with charging or plan a Turnpike stop.
- Heading west on I-70, treat each town as a checkpoint, since the stretches between them are long.
- Crosswinds across the plains raise consumption noticeably, so budget extra range on windy days instead of trusting the display.
