Charging in Kentucky
Kentucky's charging concentrates in three places: Louisville, the Lexington area, and the northern Kentucky suburbs across the river from Cincinnati, where Covington and Florence carry a surprising number of locations for their size.
Elsewhere it thins fast. Bowling Green and Richmond have a modest handful, and Owensboro and much of western Kentucky have very little. Roughly one port in four is DC fast, so plan on Level 2 for most stops outside the main corridors. ChargePoint, Tesla and Blink Charging run the most locations, with flo and AmpUp also on the map.
On the road
I-65 north to south through Louisville and Bowling Green, I-64 east to west through Louisville and Lexington, and I-75 north from Lexington into the Cincinnati suburbs are the dependable routes. I-71 links Louisville and Cincinnati. The parkways crossing western Kentucky pass through much thinner country, so treat any trip out that way as one that needs planning before you leave.
Plugs and payment
J1772 for Level 2, CCS1 and NACS for DC fast, CHAdeMO legacy. Public posts come with cables attached, so carry an adapter for the other fast standard rather than a cable. Card readers are spreading, but some networks still expect you to start the session in their app.
Three things to know
- Northern Kentucky is well covered, so use Covington or Florence as your top-up before heading south.
- Western Kentucky is sparse, so charge fully in Louisville or Bowling Green before crossing it.
- Winter cold and the hilly east both cut range, so add margin on Appalachian routes.
