Charging in Louisiana
Louisiana's charging concentrates along the southern belt, with New Orleans well ahead of anywhere else and Metairie and Kenner adding to that same cluster. Baton Rouge and Lafayette are more modest than their size suggests, and Shreveport and Monroe in the north have very little. Away from those towns, the bayou parishes are close to empty.
Close to four in ten ports are DC fast; the rest is Level 2 in hotel and garage settings, which suits a New Orleans trip well. ChargePoint has the most locations, followed by Tesla, with AmpUp, EV Connect and Blink Charging filling in around them.
On the road
I-10 is the main run, crossing the state from the Texas line through Lake Charles, Lafayette and Baton Rouge into New Orleans, and that is where the bulk of the charging sits. I-12 cuts across north of the lake to Slidell, and I-49 heads north from Lafayette through Alexandria to Shreveport, thinning as it goes. I-20 runs across the top of the state.
Plugs and payment
Level 2 is J1772, DC fast is mainly CCS1, and NACS is showing up on newer stalls as well as Tesla's own. A little CHAdeMO remains at older sites. Cables come attached. Tap-to-pay is more common in New Orleans than in the smaller parishes, so have the network apps ready before heading west or north.
Three things to know
- Heat and humidity keep the air conditioning running, so plan around a lower real-world range in summer.
- Storm season can knock sites offline; keep a second option in mind and charge before weather arrives.
- Much of the New Orleans charging sits in garages and hotel lots, so check access if you are not a guest.
