Charging in Maine

Maine keeps almost all of its charging in the southern coastal strip. Greater Portland is the centre of it, with the South Portland side of the harbour showing as many locations as the city proper, and Lewiston, Auburn, Biddeford and Bangor forming smaller clusters. Past those, coverage thins fast: a town of 20,000 like Sanford barely registers.

The upside is quality. Roughly a quarter of the state's ports are DC fast, a solid share for a rural state, though most of what you meet in town lots, hotels and trailhead parking is Level 2. ChargePoint runs the most locations, followed by Tesla, eVgo Network, AmpUp and EV Connect.

On the road

I-95 is the spine, running from the New Hampshire line past Portland and Augusta to Bangor and on toward Aroostook County, with I-295 carrying the Portland stretch. Fast charging follows that line and the busier exits off it. Coastal Route 1 heading Down East, and the roads into the western mountains, are much thinner, so treat a charger out there as a bonus rather than the plan.

Plugs and payment

J1772 covers the Level 2 posts, and DC fast sites split between CCS1 and NACS, with NACS steadily more common as networks add cables. Older CHAdeMO units still turn up. Most Level 2 posts are untethered, so carry your own cable. Tap to pay is normal on newer fast chargers; smaller sites often still want an app.

Three things to know

  • Cold winters cut range sharply, so precondition while still plugged in and add a stop on long coastal runs.
  • North and east of Bangor charging is sparse, so top up in town before heading Down East or inland.
  • Summer traffic swamps the coast, so charge overnight where you are staying rather than queuing at a resort-town post.
