EV charging stations in Maryland

2,459 charging locations and 8,340 ports across 71 cities and towns, 1,584 of them DC fast.

Charging in Maryland

Maryland's charging follows its population, in a heavy band from Baltimore down through the Washington suburbs. Baltimore has the largest single count, but the Montgomery County towns punch above their size: Rockville and Gaithersburg both carry more locations than larger towns such as Columbia and Germantown. Columbia, Silver Spring, Frederick and Ellicott City each hold a solid cluster of their own.

Roughly one port in five is DC fast, so the great majority of what you see on the map is Level 2 in garages, office parks and apartment lots. ChargePoint and Blink Charging lead, with SWTCH - Charge Everywhere, Shell Recharge Solutions and SemaConnect adding depth around the metro areas.

On the road

I-95 between Baltimore and the Washington line is the busiest corridor and the best covered, with I-270 toward Frederick close behind. US 50 heads east over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to the Eastern Shore, where sites sit in the towns rather than along the road. West of Hagerstown, I-70 and then I-68 climb into the Alleghenies and the gaps widen, so top up before the mountains.

Plugs and payment

Level 2 posts use J1772, fast chargers are a mix of CCS1 and NACS, and CHAdeMO is now a legacy fallback. Many garage units in the Washington suburbs are cable-attached, though plenty of pedestals expect you to bring your own. Contactless payment is spreading, but plan on network apps at older SemaConnect and Blink Charging posts.

Three things to know

  • Suburban garages in Rockville and Silver Spring often charge for parking as well as power, so check both rates.
  • Humid summers push air conditioning hard; add a buffer on Eastern Shore trips where sites sit far apart.
  • Baltimore and the Washington suburbs share commuter peaks, so midday and late evening are the easiest times to find a free port.
