EV charging stations in Massachusetts

8,301 charging locations and 25,364 ports across 97 cities and towns, 3,369 of them DC fast.

Charging in Massachusetts

Massachusetts is densely covered, and the coverage is heavily weighted to the east. Boston and Cambridge are the two biggest clusters by a wide margin, with Dorchester, Quincy and Lowell filling the inner ring, and Worcester, Springfield, Fall River and New Bedford anchoring the rest of the state.

Most of that is Level 2 in garages, workplaces and apartment blocks: only around one port in eight is DC fast. That suits how people actually charge here, parked for hours at a time, but it means road trips need more thought than the raw totals suggest. ChargePoint leads, ahead of Blink Charging, AmpUp, Tesla and flo.

On the road

I-90, the Mass Pike, runs the width of the state from Boston through Worcester and Springfield to the New York line, and it is the natural backbone for cross-state trips. The Route 128 and I-495 belts around Boston are thick with charging, and I-93 links the city northward. Heading to the Cape on Route 3 and Route 6, sites are fewer and much busier in summer, so plan the return leg as well.

Plugs and payment

J1772 handles Level 2, which is most of the stock, while fast sites run CCS1 and NACS side by side and a few older CHAdeMO cables hang on. Garage and kerbside posts are untethered, so carry a cable. Contactless tap works at many newer fast chargers, but urban garage charging still often runs through a network app.

Three things to know

  • Garage charging is common but sits behind parking fees, so check the parking cost, not just the session price.
  • Cape and island traffic peaks in summer, so charge before the bridges rather than after them.
  • Salt and slush foul connectors in winter, so wipe the car's port and the handle before plugging in.
