Charging in Michigan

Michigan's charging clusters tightly around the southeast. Detroit has by far the largest count, and Dearborn, Livonia, Warren, Clinton Township and Sterling Heights form a suburban ring around it. Ann Arbor and Lansing punch well above their size, helped by university and state-government parking, while Grand Rapids anchors the west side and Flint trails behind.

Roughly a fifth of the state's ports are DC fast, so plan on Level 2 for most stops. ChargePoint is the biggest network, and Red E Charge shows up here in a way it does not in most states, alongside Tesla, Blink Charging and some GE WattStation units.

On the road

I-94 across the south from Detroit through Ann Arbor to Kalamazoo, I-96 out to Lansing and Grand Rapids, and I-75 north toward the Mackinac Bridge carry most long-distance driving, and fast charging along them is reasonable through the southern Lower Peninsula. North of Traverse City, and across the Upper Peninsula on US-2, spacing stretches out considerably. Treat those legs as planned rather than improvised.

Plugs and payment

J1772 for Level 2, CCS1 for the bulk of DC fast charging, and NACS increasingly offered at newer stations as well as Tesla's own. CHAdeMO turns up only at older installations. Nearly every Level 2 post has a cable fitted. Many fast chargers take a card, but plenty still want an app, so create accounts before a trip north.

Three things to know

  • Winters here are long and cold, so expect less range and precondition the battery while still plugged in.
  • Up North and the Upper Peninsula are sparse; top up in the larger towns and arrive with real margin.
  • Much Ann Arbor and Lansing charging is in decks and on campus, which can mean permits or extra parking fees.
